OVERVIEW

Effective hazard tree assessment requires knowledge of failure characteristics of individual tree species. A tree species profile would be able to guide the tree assessors / arborists in a range of conditions and provide understanding about typical modes of tree failure, susceptibility to insect attacks and disease infections, and factors that exacerbate stress.

The development of the species-specific failure profiles for 21 common wayside trees aims to complement the skills of arborists when deciding what is reasonable to retain and why, and to provide a more defensible basis to justify removal.

OUTLINE

  • An overview of tree failures
  • Factors that contribute to:
    • Branch failure
    • Trunk failure
    • Root failure
  • Overall tree failure profiles in Singapore
    • Failure types (branch, root and trunk)
    • Failure types of distribution in Singapore
    • Key failure types by species
  • Field visit to Fort Canning Park
    • To learn how to identify some of the factors that contribute to tree failures

ABOUT THE TRAINER

Dr Fong Yok King, a retired Deputy Director from Centre for Urban Greenery and Ecology (CUGE) Research. She is a plant pathologist by training and an ISA Certified Arborist. Her arboriculture research projects focused on various aspects of tree failures like factors that contribute to tree failures, attachment strength of branches and water
sprouts, and breaking modes of branches, etc., on tropical tree species. She is a co-author of the first and second editions of the ‘Tropical Gardeners' Guide to Healthy Plants’ and the e-book ‘Pictorial Handbook for Tropical Gardeners’ Guide to Healthy Plants’.

Sim Eng Koon is an ISA Certified Arborist with 20 years of arboriculture experience and has been an arboriculture consultant since 2015. He has been involved in CUGE Research projects focusing on tree failure profiling and the attachment strength of branches. He has co-developed with CUGE the course ‘Tree Decay – The Fundamentals’ and has been a CUGE Associate Trainer for more than five years.
